Course Briefing

Be Prepared. Weather conditions are very changeable and can be extreme in this alpine area. Ensure you have sufficient food and clothing for all conditions on all parts of this course. If unsure please ask.

 

Course briefing 10.30am at start line.

 

Leg 1. 900 mtr Run/ Sprint:

Approx 4 minutes

A mass start run from the lake edge at Glendhu Bay to the end of the camp and back. This will separate the field a little.

 

Leg 2. 16.5 km Road Cycle:

Approx 20-30 minutes

Ride from Glendhu Bay to the Treble Cone Turnaround and back to the camp.

 

Leg 3. 9.9 km Off Road Run :

Approx 60 minutes

SCENIC off-road run from and back to Glendhu Bay camping ground via an undulating 4X4 track on the side of Roy's Peak. Then back along the new millenium track to the camp ground.

The course will be marked where necessary with black arrows.

 

Leg 4. Kayak / Swim TBA

Approx 1.30 minutes

Kayak from the Glendhu Bay lake front to a bouy off Ruby Island and back. If conditions on the lake are not safe then the course will change to two laps around Paddock Bay.

or

Swim from the kayak start around bouys parallel to the foreshore and back.

The swim and kayak course will be marked with bouys that have to be rounded on the left hand side. Safety boats will be in the water at all times.

If you need assistance attract attention by waving your hand or paddle above your head.

 

Leg 5. 25.5 km Mountain Bike (this includes the 4.5km ride after the run)

Approx 60 minutes

Ride from the camp ground through and around private farmland in the Glendhu West Wanaka Area. Exact course TBA.

 

COURSE HAZARDS:

Sprint

  • Injuries from not having a proper warm up.
  • Uneven ground and different surfaces from grass, stones, concrete etc,
  • Collision with other competitors in the mass start.

 

Road ride

  • Windy , undulating road with two one way bridges.
  • Vehicles on route.
  • Ice/Snow/Gravel/Mud/Stock on road.
  • Sharp corners that are slippery if wet.
  • Bunch riding is dangerous if not familiar or skilled at it. Learn how or stay out of the bunches.

 

Run

  • Vehicle hazard when crossing the Glendhu Bay Road leaving the camp and at the Roy Peak track crossing.
  • Wet and slippery conditions underfoot.
  • Disorientation from not following the marked course.
  • Rocks, uneven terrain and stock on course.
  • Steep bluffs on the side of the track.

 

Kayak

  • Rough lake conditions.
  • Taking in water while breathing.
  • Failure to escape an upturned boat.
  • Wet and cold conditions causing hypothermia.
  • There will be a physical inspection of kayaks to ensure they are safe and sea worthy.

 

MTB

  • For all cycle legs there will be no road closures therefore all road rules apply at all times during this race.
  • Rough, muddy, wet and slippery terrain on course.
  • wandering stock
  • Key intersection of Motatapu Rd. Be aware of vehicles and other transitioning from the camp.
  • Beware of ice, snow and other hazards on the road surface.
  • Beware of vehicles traveling in poor visibility and weather conditions.
